The East Coast may be experiencing record highs, but here in Idaho we are trapped inside by freezing days. Mike and I tried to ski yesterday – I took a couple runs and it felt like I had a permanent ice cream headache. He lasted about an hour longer than me, but came stumbling into the lodge frozen solid. Brr.
A friend of mine posted an experiment on Facebook – she challenged us folks living in below zero temps to take a cup of boiling water and throw it into the air.
The results:
Amazing, no? The boiling water instantly vaporizes. So freaking cool.
On Friday night Mike and I were driving home and saw an amazing phenomenon – light pillars. A light pillar is a ”visual phenomenon created by the reflection of light from ice crystals with near horizontal parallel planar surfaces.” (thanks Wikipedia!) At first I just thought we had a dirty windshield. But the next day, this amazing picture popped up on the Sun Valley Facebook page:
I’m trapped in the house – too cold to go outside – and by some miracle the house is already clean. Mike is doing an assignment all day – so guess I’ll be searching for a quiet, fun DIY to pass the hours!

Hope they love it! We kept the dogs inside, because some boiling water does drop to the ground.

That is crazy cool! I may have to try that with my science loving kiddo.
As for the light pillars that is beyond amazing. Such a beautiful sight.

We are having a bit of a cold snap here in Central Oregon too. Makes me want to knit and cook pots of soup. Stay cozy, Jenn
